The murky line of victory separates rebellion and terrorism. After all, if the American revolutionaries had failed in their secessionist movement, they would currently be known as terrorists. Modern people have placed some unofficial labels on extremist groups to try and differentiate more peaceful rebel groups from bloodthirsty terrorist factions.

I bring this up because of how close the Confederate States of America came to going down in history as heroic rebels. Americans now call the Confederates terrorists. That is understandable because of how they shed the blood of their countrymen over a mere political disagreement.

By all accounts, the American Civil War should have been a brief affair. One faction was a well-supplied and massive army of professional soldiers. The other was a group of mostly passionate farmers who took up arms against their northern neighbors. Constant underestimation of the South prolonged their rebellion.

It turns out that grit has a surprising amount of impact on a war’s outcome. Since many northern leaders lacked the grit to risk their men for victory, the southern commanders who did possess that grit were able to secure major victories.

This quiz will examine the Civil War through the lens of dates. We will either provide you with a historical date and a hint to ask what event happened then, or we will do the inverse asking you on what date a historic event occurred.
