Broadway takes its name from the street around which New York City’s Theater District was born. A very specific type of musical theater was developed in Broadway. There, entire shows would be put on united around a central story with boisterous non-diegetic music acting as a companion to the spoken dialogue of the characters.
Even in their earliest days, Broadway musicals were major crowd pleasers. People flocked from all over the world to see the spectacles being performed within New York City. A number of these Broadway shows would attract such a devoted following that we still recognize their names and scores.
