Naval Warfare History Quiz
The battles that determined world history were not always fought on land alone. From an early age, primitive civilizations were able to traverse the seas in order to gain resources. However, conflicts invariably erupted on the open water as more and more opposed factions developed their own navies.
Society was quick to romanticize much about the warfare that took place on the oceans and rivers of the world. Writers and painters commemorated great battles with works speaking to their grand scale and terrifying ferocity. But these artistic interpretations often ignored the bloody reality of what was at stake in these battles.
The sailors and marines who piloted these vessels had little between them and the briny depths aside from a wooden or metal hull. Nevertheless, thousands of brave navy men have laid down their lives to face off against their enemies in the hopes of aiding their homelands.
For island nations, navies were vitally important resources that were used not only in the pursuit of domination, but also to protect their resources from other countries that might seek to do them harm.
