State Mottos Quiz
The American states were each formed as individual pieces of a unified whole. This is the purpose behind naming the nation the United States of America. The first crack at making an American government gave each state a large amount of sovereignty independent of its neighbors.
Such a system ended up causing serious problems economically and socially. So, the Constitution fixed this issue by uniting every state under a stronger federal government while still retaining sovereign rights for each individual state. The states still wished to express their individuality as a statement of what made them each a unique piece of the larger America.
This sentiment led to the origin of state governments selecting certain symbols that would represent the individual spirit of their land. State governments selected their own state birds, state flags, and even state mottos. The mottos of the American states are short impactful statements meant to capture some element of the state’s past or present.
Sometimes, these phrases are lifted from other notable sources. Mostly, though, they are original statements formulated for the purpose of encapsulating the spirit of their state. Some of these mottos are recorded in Latin.
In such cases, we will be utilizing accepted English translations of those phrases. We will ask you to identify states based on their mottos and/or trivia reflected within the motto.
