It was a period where death and destruction wore the crowns of the Earth. Civilizations neared their breaking points as an unprecedented disease swept across much of the known world. Its end was fortuitous, and we pray that we may never see its like again, but the Black Death will never leave our cultural memory.
It’s fairly easy to take modern medical science for granted. When one considers how, centuries ago, people didn’t even understand how germs caused illness, it’s a wonder how more plagues didn’t ravage mankind. The Black Plague tested the limits of our civilization.
With unprecedented numbers of people dropping dead with no obvious explanation as to why, fear warped people’s minds. Mistrust of their neighbors led to full violent uprisings. Ignorance of medical science left the people defenseless in the face of a nightmarish invader that people couldn’t see let alone combat.
In all, this historic pandemic left the world in a new state once it finally diminished. All of that rampant destruction ravaged social order and left many without their loved ones.
Thankfully, a brighter dawn was there to meet the survivors as nations revolutionized to improve the rights they gave their citizens, and a brand new boom in academia would help ensure another plague like the Black Death would never scour the Earth again.
