The Bourbon Restoration Quiz
France’s revolution was explosive and violent. Even mentioning the event conjures images of guillotines and the storming of the Bastille. Many people are unaware that the original French Revolution didn’t stick, though. It took multiple attempts for France to adopt a lasting republican government.
Before that point came about, many dramatic reactionary political shifts happened as the nation fell under the influence of authoritarians and reformers. Too much of a swing in one direction would invariably mean a future swing in the opposite direction. It truly is a testament to the spirit of France that so many failed attempts at establishing a democratic government didn’t put them off the idea of liberty altogether.
Following the first revolution, despots quickly overwhelmed France. Whatever democratic framework the people had established was ripped up board-by-board to make way for empty promises of prosperity that enriched only those at the very top.
Case in point, the Bourbon Restoration marked one of France’s last official periods where such rulers were allowed to trample on the people’s demands for liberty. Roots in the old monarchy “legitimized” the Bourbon Restoration.
Though some consider the country’s leaders during this period to be less than tyrants, there is little denying the fact that they set up the pecking order with little room for opposition from below.
As much as to test, this quiz is meant to inform. So, we hope you come out of it knowing something new.
