The Goths Quiz
We aren’t entirely certain of much regarding the origin of the Goths. The destruction of records and general lack of interest in preserving their history give us little idea of how they sprang up until they reached the European mainland. From there, we know of the impact they had on Western history.
The Goths were generally a warrior people. Certainly, they experienced times of peace and even times of nomadic prosperity. Their real mark on the wider world came from their interactions with the rest of the world. European rulers never really understood their relationships with the Goths. At one moment, close alliances with this group would help turn the tide of a war.
Then, only a few years later, the Goths would be marching on their capital with swords drawn. Learning about the full history of the Goths can help clear up some of these contradictions while adding new ones to the mix. Many people despised the Goths. Such was to be expected in an age when pretty much every group of people hated every other. That hatred justified multiple atrocities to be committed against the Goths. In turn, their own hatred would justify counterattacks of equal or even greater magnitude.
