Answer: A fortress/prison

The Chateau was originally constructed as a military stronghold. Over time, it was renovated to serve as a prison for some of France’s most dangerous criminals. A good portion of Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo took place within this dark and mysterious location.
