The Inquisition was intended to bring about a more Christian age in Spain. After centuries of being subjugated by the caliphates of Africa, the newly-freed Spain began to grow suspicious of things that existed outside of their favored Catholicism. “The Pit and the Pendulum” is a short story that describes in gruesome detail one type of torture used during the Inquisition.
