Answer: Great Britain
During the First Boer War, Britain lost control of a few states in southern Africa where the Boers established their own governments. In the Second Boer War, Britain returned to reconquer those lands. By the war’s end, the Boer states were added to the Union of South Africa which Britain controlled.
