The Dreyfus Affair saw the wrongful imprisonment of one Captain Alfred Dreyfus on charges of selling state secrets. When the press discovered that testimony and documents used to convict Dreyfus were forged by public officials, France entered a state of uproar. In much of the French-speaking world, the term Dreyfus Affair is used to refer to periods where government incompetence or dishonesty leads to innocent people suffering.
