The American military was born from the service of brave men who risked their lives in the pursuit of liberty. Militia organizations made up the majority of that original American military. As the government of that new republic was established, the need arose for a proper centralized army in order to protect interests domestic and abroad.
Even in those early days, there were notable heroes who rose through the ranks to become proper American icons. Oftentimes, we could find these icons in the brave commanders who helped to organize and command the early American armed forces. Winfield Scott was one of a few individuals who fits this description.
A man of intellect and gruff determination, Scott had the qualities that historically can make for a truly effective officer. His command was organized, effective, and disciplined. This allowed them to accomplish objectives which other less capable outfits would have been unable to.
Beyond his victories on the battlefield, Scott was also known for his political and bureaucratic accomplishments. It can be said that he was a pivotal force in structuring the American military prior to the worst conflict the nation would ever experience.
