The Rutherford B. Hayes Quiz
The American nation found itself in a peculiar place following the Reconstruction. With a newly reintegrated South trying to regain its political influence, tensions that had flared to cause the Civil War were once again beginning to glow.
There were multiple grim examples demonstrating the schism that still split America in spite of its official reunion. It was into this tenuous situation that Rutherford B. Hayes ascended to the presidency.
Hayes managed to cultivate a solid reputation during his time in politics and the military. As such, he was a solid choice for a political nominee. However, many questioned whether or not he would have the personal fortitude to bring about meaningful change. Even the circumstances of Hayes’ ascension were cause for debate among politicians.
Either way, Hayes served his time and attempted to implement his platform. Historians still debate the efficacy of Hayes as a leader, but the place he occupied in American history was surprisingly influential. He was a forerunner of a new era of American politics. With a rapidly changing national voting base and many civil issues boiling over, Hayes’ presidency saw the beginnings and continuations of rather complicated changes in the nation.
With the benefit of hindsight, we have the ability to draw our own conclusions about Hayes. Yet, even back in his day, he was still quite contentious due to the polarized state of the country.
As much as to test, this quiz is meant to inform. So, we hope you come out of it knowing something new.
