The Ottoman Empire was born of the remnants of the Middle East’s caliphates. Centuries of decline weakened the Byzantine Empire to the point that the Ottomans were able to conquer it with relative ease. When the Ottoman Empire itself fell, it would become the modern nation of Turkey.
